Parish Church of St. Nicolo in Obervintl

The parish church of Obervintl is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. This patronage suggests that the church may have existed long before its first recorded mention around 1300. The uniform Gothic building, dating from the late 15th century, was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1749 and decorated with ceiling frescoes in 1891. Of the carved altar created by Hans Klocker in 1490, only the figure of the church's patron saint has survived, later repainted. As the population continued to grow, the church became too small, making an extension necessary. Construction of the extension began on 14 March 1995. The southern extension was designed by the architect Werner Franz from Bruneck. On Christmas Eve 1995, the extension was blessed for worship by Cathedral Provost Peter Zelger, and in 1996, on Guardian Angels' Sunday (1 September), Bishop Wilhelm Egger consecrated the church.
